Why server-side tracking is better for your clients
Server-side tracking moves the work from the visitor’s browser to a server the client controls. That one change brings four advantages your clients will notice.
- Collect
- Store
- Use
- Activate
1 · More of the data arrives
A server does not run ad blockers and does not close the tab too early. Events that reach the client’s own endpoint are processed and passed on reliably, so fewer leads and orders go missing between the site and the platforms.
2 · Returning visitors are recognised for longer
A cookie set by the website’s own server, on its own domain, is treated by Safari as first-party and is kept far longer than one set by a script. A customer who comes back after two weeks is still recognised as the same person.
One condition matters: the server has to belong to the site. A “tracking subdomain” pointed at a separate server is still capped at 7 days.
3 · The client decides what is shared
In the browser, every tag sees everything. On a server, the client decides which fields go to which platform, removes what should not leave, and applies consent in one place instead of in every tag.
4 · The website gets lighter
Fewer third-party scripts in the browser means less for the page to load. Sites that once carried a dozen tags can carry one.
Key takeaways
- Server-side means fewer lost conversions and better data for bidding.
- Visitor recognition lasts longer when the cookie comes from the site’s own server.
- Data sharing and consent are controlled in one place, by the client.
- Fewer scripts make the website faster.
For your marketing agency
Better data feeds better bidding, and better bidding makes your campaigns look like what they are. Server-side tracking is one of the few changes that improves results without touching budgets or creative.
